DJ Desisto’s second release, “caçada rio acima”, is one of those records which set out to create a soundtrack for a movie that does not exist. In this case, however, it is a case of writing a soundtrack for a city that exists, has never existed and could possibly exist. A soundtrack for a scandi-noir style thriller set in a rainy day in the 1200’s would be São Paulo, for a mystery in which an officer works opens a portal to the post, for a sci-fi about a São Paulo where the Europeans never came, the urban sprawl hidden under the canopies, it’s only visible signs the neon cords running along the city, unclear if transportation or communication devices. São Paulo’s kaleidoscopic sprawl came into existence a little over a century ago, a village and trading outpost smack in the middle of the Atlantic Forest before then. Highrises and overpasses situtated in streets with Tupi Guarani names, a city hall raised above a literal valley of evil spirits, migrants and immigrants, the indigenous communities still holding as best as they can. This is a record intent on exploding time and space, using traditional folk songs, industrial beats and distant synth swathes which inhabits a pocket unvierse of its own.
