On her first record for problemas dos outros, Heirloom Mask, JOHANNA takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey through the day, from the scorching morning sun to the late-night sea-breeze. The alter-ego of the São Paulo-born artist and anthropologist Joana Yamaguchi, who has been living, studying and working in Ho Chi Minh City for the past few years, conjures a 30-minute musical adventure where cultural, national and class identities seem to melt into one another and in which we seem to be asked to exhilarate in such a tenuous and ghost-like foothold of identity, time and space.

Heirloom Mask starts of with the solar energy of “Synth Hunter Mask #2”, smoke drifting off the pots and pans under the scorching sun, the adrenaline of setting of for a day of hunting, the enjoyment of playacting pachamama tropes. “Senta e Chora, o Filme” keeps the earthy vibe, but drugs and kidnaps a Japanese Insen scale to an outdoor noontime jam taking place somewhere between Bali and West Africa, the exact location difficult to pinpoint because everything is spinning so fast. The General Midi, late-afternoon educational-cartoon sounds of “Babar Vista” let their hair down and prepare for the evening out, displaying the playful somberness of young Kids’ TV stars clocking out for the day. The non-places of dark-lit metropolises the world over from Asia to South America of “ATM Saga” segues into the nocturnal latter half of the record, code-switching decidedly non-Caribbean nautical Dub into ghostly wails and glimmers, the ambiance now maritime and even more desolate.

The spectral, fleeting encounters with identity, belonging and pretending to belong as a Brazilian woman trying to get by in East Asia are the raw materials that JOHANNA uses to fold pastiche into pastiche, simulacra into simulacra, vision into vision; a method to achieve the only concretude of the hyperreal: the eternal, haunting vibe of what can never be.
