The Hype is gone and the doors are closed. Osasco Dynamics, the neural lace company specializing in evangelical indoctrination, has long shut down physical operations and outsourced its services to remote lace studios. As with every dream of a third-world technological leapfrog, this one is dead and gone: The masterminds long ago brain-drained to the latest hype capitals, Osasco once again a lumpen city with lumpen jobs for lumpen workers. The bootleg-laced, unemployed youngsters prowling the gas station aprons still drink cheap beer every night, but there is no sound system to be heard. This music is playing, replaying and relaying over the neural laces, the unserviced connections mangling the signals beyond recognition from listener to listener. Meditation music sounds off for a few seconds before being drilled into abstraction, the next recognizable bit ranging from anything to 80s Goth-Pop to dream pop, evangelical content now warped beyond salvation. The signal-to-noise ratio varies from lace to lace and the excitement is in finding from where/when each nugget of meaning and melody comes from. No longer a town of its time and place, Osasco mangles cultural eras, spiritual teachings and entrepreneurial bad advice from throughout space and time, humans and just-under-Turing-Test bots celebrating the disaster. The modded, second-hand neural lace market is booming here.
